In 2016, SL Green (private real estate developer), invested $220 million in improvements for Grand Central in exchange for special zoning to accommodate its 67-story, 1.7 million-square-foot, 1401-foot-tall skyscraper, One Vanderbilt—making it the largest private investment in the subway system to date. The series of improvements aim to modernize and decongest the busy transit hub. It includes new entrances to Grand Central Terminal and the Shuttle Subway Station under the tower’s footprint, and the future Long Island Railroad’s (LIRR) East Side Access. Once the LIRR opens to the public in 2022, the OVA Transit improvements will be one of the few multimodal transit connectors in East Midtown, connecting two commuter railroads with the subway network.
